Rainscreen installation is part of the wall construction behind many siding and cladding systems. It creates separation between the weather-resistive barrier and the finished facade while providing the attachment plane required for the exterior material specified on the project.

The rainscreen cannot be planned independently from the cladding that will cover it. Horizontal lap siding, vertical siding, board and batten, fibre-cement panels, cedar and architectural cladding can require different layouts because their fastening directions, joints, trims and material transitions are different.

Openings and architectural changes make the work more detailed than installing repetitive strapping across an uninterrupted wall. Windows, doors, corners, decks, roof intersections, penetrations and changes between cladding materials affect how the rainscreen and finished exterior come together.

On renovations, removing the original siding can reveal uneven wall conditions, previous modifications and older attachment methods that need to be considered before the replacement facade is installed. On new construction, rainscreen preparation can be coordinated from the beginning with the specified wall assembly and exterior finish.

A rainscreen is part of the concealed construction behind the finished facade. Depending on the specified wall assembly, rainscreen strapping, furring or other components establish a space between the weather-resistive barrier and the siding or cladding installed over it.
That space is significant because exterior cladding is not the only layer involved in managing weather at the wall. The finished siding provides the outer surface, while the assembly behind it can include a weather-resistive barrier, flashings and a rainscreen cavity designed around the requirements of the building and selected facade.
The rainscreen also creates the physical attachment arrangement for many cladding systems. This is why rainscreen installation needs to be coordinated with material direction and fastening rather than installed as a generic grid without considering the finished exterior.
Horizontal lap siding creates one type of wall layout. Vertical siding creates another. Board-and-batten siding, panel cladding, cedar and architectural metal can introduce additional fastening and transition requirements.
James Hardie and other fibre-cement siding can be used in several architectural formats on the same building. A project may combine horizontal lap siding on main walls, vertical board and batten on gables and fibre-cement panels around entrances or feature elevations.
Those changes in orientation can affect what needs to happen behind the visible material. Diamond Exteriors coordinates rainscreen preparation with the actual siding system being installed rather than assuming one backing layout works for every exterior finish.
Panel siding adds another consideration because panel dimensions and joint locations are visible in the completed facade. The supporting wall preparation needs to correspond with the approved panel arrangement and fastening requirements.
Metal cladding can be even more dependent on organized substrate preparation. Vertical metal siding, horizontal metal systems, LUX products and other architectural metal cladding use distinct profiles, trims and fastening conditions. The rainscreen or furring arrangement behind those materials needs to be established before long finished sections begin covering the wall.
ACM panels create a highly organized architectural facade where panel joints, reveals, corners and openings are deliberately positioned. The underlying wall preparation has to support that exterior configuration rather than being developed independently from it.
Cedar siding and other wood exterior systems can also be installed over rainscreen assemblies where specified. Bevel siding, vertical cedar, board and batten and other wood configurations have different orientation and fastening conditions that influence how the concealed wall is prepared.
Multi-material exteriors create some of the most detailed rainscreen conditions because one building may change cladding direction, thickness and attachment method several times.
A custom home might use James Hardie lap siding across the main walls, vertical fibre cement on upper elevations, architectural metal at an entrance and cedar beneath or beside feature areas. Another building may combine siding with stucco, masonry or stone.
The transition between those materials needs to be planned in three dimensions. The visible faces may not finish at the same depth, and the concealed attachment systems behind them may also differ.
Rainscreen preparation therefore helps establish the plane on which the finished exterior will sit. When different facade materials meet, the underlying wall arrangement needs to anticipate the finished transition before trims and cladding close the area.
Corners create another important condition. Inside and outside corners bring rainscreen components, WRB, trim and cladding together at changes in wall direction. Architectural projections, recessed walls and bay-style sections can multiply those transitions across one elevation.
Windows and doors interrupt the rainscreen repeatedly. Strapping and cladding preparation need to terminate and restart around openings while preserving the required relationships between the window or door, exterior flashing, trims and finished facade.
Large modern homes can contain extensive glazing with comparatively narrow areas of cladding between windows. This leaves less open wall area for conventional repetitive layouts and creates more transitions around each opening.
Exterior penetrations have a similar effect. Vents, electrical equipment, exterior lights, hose connections, mechanical services and other items pass through the wall and can affect both the concealed rainscreen and visible cladding around them.
These components should be considered while the wall remains accessible. Once metal panels, fibre cement, cedar or another finished system has been installed, altering the concealed attachment arrangement becomes substantially more disruptive.
Roof intersections can also affect rainscreen work. Lower roofs, attached garages, additions, entrance roofs and other architectural sections can meet vertical exterior walls and require transitions between roofing, flashing, WRB, rainscreen and siding.
Soffit conditions occur at the upper wall. Siding and cladding generally terminate near the eave or roof overhang, bringing rainscreen preparation into the same area as soffit, fascia, upper wall flashings and exterior trim.
Decks and balconies create additional intersections at lower and intermediate elevations. Posts, ledgers, railings, doors and finished wall materials can all converge in these areas.
Diamond Exteriors approaches these locations as part of the actual exterior project rather than treating rainscreen installation as a repetitive wall-covering exercise.
Exterior renovations create a different set of challenges from new construction because the original cladding and concealed wall conditions already exist.
A siding replacement project may begin with vinyl siding, cedar, fibre cement, stucco-adjacent walls or another older exterior system. Once those materials are removed, the underlying construction becomes visible and the replacement rainscreen can be planned around the accessible wall condition and new facade.
Previous renovations may have changed portions of the building. One addition may use different wall sheathing or exterior preparation from the original structure. Replaced windows may have altered opening dimensions or trim conditions. Old vents may have been abandoned while new penetrations were added elsewhere.
A major exterior renovation provides the opportunity to coordinate the replacement wall preparation instead of simply fastening new siding over whatever arrangement happens to remain from an earlier installation.
The project still needs a defined boundary. Finding a concealed condition during siding removal does not automatically turn the work into a full building-envelope investigation. Diamond Exteriors addresses accessible exterior construction within the approved project scope and does not represent rainscreen work as engineering, destructive investigation or building-envelope consulting.
Where significant deterioration or an unusual condition becomes visible, additional review may be required before the area is covered. The appropriate response depends on what is actually discovered and the responsibilities established for the project.
Weather-resistive barrier installation normally occurs behind the rainscreen. DuPont Tyvek or another specified WRB is installed at the wall assembly before the outer siding or cladding is completed.
The WRB and rainscreen perform related but different functions, so Diamond Exteriors maintains separate pages for weather-resistive barrier installation and rainscreen installation rather than presenting them as interchangeable terms.
Flashings also remain separate components. Window heads, doors, roof-to-wall transitions, horizontal material changes and other exterior conditions can require flashing details that interact with both the weather-resistive layer and rainscreen.
New construction offers the advantage of establishing these relationships before the facade is installed. Builders, developers and general contractors can coordinate the WRB, rainscreen, exterior flashings, openings and cladding from the construction documents and approved project details.
Custom homes frequently benefit from this coordination because contemporary exterior design often uses several materials, deep openings, large glazing areas and complex architectural geometry.
The rainscreen can be planned as part of the complete siding and cladding package rather than being installed first and adapted later when the architectural facade reaches complicated areas.
Multi-family developments introduce scale. A townhouse project can repeat the same exterior wall, window and cladding details across dozens of units. The rainscreen installation needs to remain consistent with those repeated conditions while still responding to end units, corners, roof changes and different building types.
Apartment and condominium construction can involve larger uninterrupted wall areas, multiple storeys and several facade materials. Project sequencing, access and coordination with other exterior trades become increasingly important as the building size increases.

Strata renovations create a similar scale on existing properties. A strata exterior project may involve removing aging cladding across several buildings, completing wall preparation and rainscreen work, and installing a replacement facade as part of a planned capital upgrade.
Property managers and strata councils may undertake this work as part of siding replacement, exterior rehabilitation or broader building renewal rather than addressing individual sections of wall one small repair at a time.
Selected commercial projects can also require rainscreen installation behind fibre cement, metal cladding, architectural panels or other exterior systems. Commercial entrances, feature walls and large elevations can create different cladding conditions within the same project.
Government, municipal and institutional exterior projects may specify similar rainscreen and cladding assemblies as part of a defined public-sector exterior package. Where those scopes align with Diamond Exteriors' capabilities, the rainscreen can be delivered together with the applicable siding, cladding and wall preparation.
Insurance and property-loss projects can require new rainscreen where an exterior wall has been substantially damaged. Fire, impact or other losses can result in siding, cladding, WRB, rainscreen and adjoining exterior components being reconstructed together.
Wildfire reconstruction can create even larger new exterior scopes. Where damaged sections of a structure are rebuilt, new wall assemblies may include WRB, rainscreen, fibre cement, metal cladding, soffit, fascia and other exterior components.
Wildfire-resilient exterior upgrades can also involve changing an existing facade from one material system to another. A different cladding product can have different thickness, fastening or substrate requirements, making the rainscreen part of the overall redesign of the exterior wall.
