The visible siding or cladding is only the outer layer of an exterior wall. Behind it, the building-envelope assembly needs to manage water, exterior air movement and drainage while providing a properly prepared substrate for the finished facade.

Diamond Exteriors coordinates building-envelope installation with the siding and cladding systems that cover it. Depending on the project, this can include a weather-resistive barrier, rainscreen cavity, flashings, opening transitions, exterior penetrations and other details required before the wall is closed with fibre cement, metal cladding, cedar, vinyl siding, ACM panels or other exterior materials.

Renovation work requires particular attention because removing an existing facade can reveal conditions that were not visible beforehand. Previous siding installations, renovations, window changes, additions and exterior penetrations can leave several generations of materials behind the finished wall. Where the project scope allows, accessible conditions can be reviewed as the old exterior is removed and the new wall assembly is prepared.

On new construction, building-envelope work can be coordinated from plans and construction details before the finished exterior is installed. This allows WRB, rainscreen, flashings, siding and cladding to progress in the intended sequence and helps avoid closing exterior areas before adjoining details are complete.

Diamond Exteriors provides building-envelope installation throughout Kelowna, West Kelowna, Lake Country, Peachland, Summerland, Vernon and surrounding Okanagan communities. Our building-envelope work is primarily completed as part of exterior renovations, siding replacement, cladding installation, new construction, custom homes, multi-family projects, strata buildings and selected commercial exterior scopes.
A building envelope is not one single product. At the exterior wall, it is an assembly of materials and transitions that work behind and with the finished siding or cladding. The exact assembly depends on the building and project, but exterior work can involve a weather-resistive barrier, rainscreen space, flashings, tapes, transitions around openings and penetrations, and the attachment system required for the selected facade.
Weather-resistive barrier installation is one of the important layers behind many exterior cladding systems. WRB products such as DuPont Tyvek and other specified membranes are installed before the exterior wall is covered. The barrier needs to remain continuous through the practical transitions of the building rather than existing only across open wall areas.
Windows and doors create some of the most important interruptions in an exterior wall. The wall membrane, opening flashings, sill conditions, head details, trims and finished siding all meet within a relatively small area. These interfaces need to be coordinated with the actual window or door condition and the specified exterior assembly.
Balconies, decks, exterior lights, hose connections, vents, electrical components, mechanical penetrations and other wall-mounted elements create additional interruptions. Each penetration changes what would otherwise be a continuous exterior layer and needs to be incorporated into the wall preparation before siding or cladding hides the surrounding area.
Rainscreen installation adds a drainage and ventilation space between the weather-management layer and many types of exterior cladding. Rainscreen strapping or other specified components establish the cavity and provide the attachment plane required for the facade system.
The depth, orientation and layout of rainscreen components need to work with the selected exterior finish. Horizontal lap siding, vertical board and batten, panel siding and architectural cladding do not necessarily use the same attachment arrangement. The wall preparation therefore needs to be coordinated with the direction, fastening and detailing requirements of the exterior material being installed.
Fibre-cement siding projects are a common example. James Hardie and other fibre-cement products may be installed as horizontal lap siding, vertical siding, board and batten or panel systems. The WRB, rainscreen and exterior details behind those products need to be prepared for the actual siding configuration rather than treated as a generic layer that is unrelated to the finished facade.
Metal cladding creates different considerations. Vertical and horizontal metal siding, architectural metal panels and other metal systems can use distinct attachment methods, trims and transition details. The building-envelope work behind the metal needs to coordinate with those components before long runs of finished cladding are installed.
ACM and other panelized facades can make coordination particularly important because the finished exterior is organized around panel dimensions, joints, trims and architectural lines. Openings and transitions behind that facade need to be established before the visible panel layout reaches them.
Cedar and other wood siding systems also rely on the wall assembly behind the finished boards. Board orientation, rainscreen configuration, trims, openings and transitions need to work together while preserving the architectural appearance of the wood exterior.
Multi-material exteriors increase the number of transitions on a building. A single elevation can move from fibre cement to metal, from siding to masonry, or from panel cladding to wood. Material thicknesses, attachment planes and trim conditions can change at those locations, so the hidden wall assembly needs to anticipate the finished transition.
Stucco and masonry can also meet siding or cladding within the same exterior renovation or new-construction project. These junctions may require project-specific transitions rather than simply ending one wall finish and starting another without considering how the underlying exterior layers connect.
Flashings are another critical part of exterior wall construction. They are used at locations where water needs to be directed over, around or away from transitions in the assembly. Window heads, doors, horizontal material changes, penetrations, roof-to-wall conditions and other exterior junctions can all require flashing details appropriate to the project.
Custom sheet metal may be used where standard trim components do not resolve a particular exterior condition. Architectural cladding, additions, roof transitions and renovations can create dimensions that need to be measured and coordinated with the surrounding wall system.
Exterior renovations often make building-envelope work more complex than new construction because the wall already exists. Once old siding or cladding is removed, contractors may encounter previous membranes, old flashings, patched areas, abandoned penetrations or details from earlier renovations.
That does not automatically mean the entire wall requires reconstruction. The accessible condition and the planned renovation scope determine what work is appropriate. Diamond Exteriors can coordinate the exterior layers involved in the siding or cladding project without representing that work as engineering or a destructive building-envelope investigation.
Where visible damage, staining or deterioration appears during an exterior project, the affected area may require additional review before it is covered again. The purpose is to avoid installing a new facade directly over an unresolved accessible exterior condition.
Water-entry concerns can sometimes lead property owners to consider siding or building-envelope work. A visible leak inside a building does not by itself identify the exterior source. Roofing, windows, doors, wall penetrations, flashings, decks, cladding transitions and other areas can all be involved.
For that reason, Diamond Exteriors does not treat every moisture complaint as proof that the wall membrane has failed. Accessible exterior conditions can be reviewed within the scope of the project, while engineering, destructive investigation or specialized consulting remains separate where those services are required.
Major siding replacement provides one of the best opportunities to address the wall assembly because the existing facade is already being removed. The WRB, rainscreen and flashings can then be coordinated with the new siding rather than attempting to modify concealed layers after the finished facade is installed.
Exterior renovations can also change the type of wall system entirely. An older building may be converted from one siding material to fibre cement, metal cladding or a multi-material design. The new exterior can have different thicknesses, fastening requirements and rainscreen conditions from the original facade.
Window and door relationships may also change visually when a new rainscreen and siding assembly increases the depth of the exterior wall finish. Trims, flashings and returns need to account for the completed exterior rather than only the original wall condition.
Additions create another building-envelope transition. New walls need to connect to an existing structure while siding, cladding and architectural details may continue across both portions. The connection between old and new construction needs to be incorporated into the exterior scope rather than hidden behind a visual material transition.
New construction provides a different workflow. The wall assembly can be installed in sequence before the finished facade is complete. Builders and project teams can coordinate WRB, opening details, rainscreen, cladding attachments and exterior materials from the original construction documents.
Custom homes frequently use several siding and cladding systems on the same project. Fibre cement, metal, stone, stucco, cedar and architectural panels may all appear on different elevations or within one facade. Building-envelope coordination becomes increasingly important as the number of exterior material transitions increases.
Large roof overhangs and covered spaces can change the exposure of individual wall sections but do not eliminate the need for coordinated exterior layers. Entrances, patios, decks, balconies and recessed walls still contain openings, penetrations and transitions that need to connect with the overall assembly.
Multi-family construction introduces repetition. A wall detail used around one townhouse window may be repeated dozens or hundreds of times across a development. Consistency in WRB installation, rainscreen layout, flashing and siding preparation therefore becomes an important part of the exterior scope.
Townhouse and condominium projects can also contain several building types with different elevations, rooflines and facade materials. One development may use horizontal siding on residential walls, architectural panels around entrances and metal cladding on feature areas. Each exterior condition needs to connect back to the wall assembly behind it.
Strata exterior renovations can involve removing aging siding across several buildings and rebuilding portions of the exterior wall assembly before new cladding is installed. These projects may be completed as phased capital improvements rather than one small isolated siding job.
Property managers and strata councils may also be addressing known exterior deterioration, aging membranes, repeated siding deficiencies or planned building rehabilitation. The final scope should reflect the actual project information and any professional recommendations supplied for the building.
Selected commercial and institutional buildings can require similar building-envelope and cladding work. Exterior rehabilitation may include removal of existing wall finishes, WRB installation, rainscreen preparation, new siding or architectural cladding and project-specific flashing.
Government and public-sector exterior projects can also contain defined building-envelope trade scopes. Municipal or institutional buildings undergoing exterior renewal may require new weather-management layers and cladding as part of a larger capital upgrade or building rehabilitation project.
Insurance and property-loss restoration can expose building-envelope assemblies after significant exterior damage. Fire, impact, falling trees or other insured events may require siding, cladding, WRB, rainscreen, soffit, fascia and other exterior components to be reconstructed together.
Wildfire reconstruction can involve even larger portions of the exterior wall. Where a building or major section is rebuilt, the new weather-resistive barrier, rainscreen and cladding can form part of a reconstructed exterior rather than a conventional siding replacement.
Wildfire-resilient exterior upgrades can also influence material choices at the facade. The appropriate strategy depends on the actual building, design and project requirements, but changing exterior materials can create a need to reconsider the wall preparation and transitions behind those materials.
Diamond Exteriors' building-envelope work is closely tied to its broader siding and cladding capability. Exterior wall preparation is not completed in isolation and then forgotten. It needs to support the fibre cement, metal, cedar, vinyl, ACM or other exterior system installed over it.
Soffit and fascia connect to the building envelope near the top of the wall. WRB and rainscreen details terminate beneath roof overhangs and around roof-edge conditions while the finished siding meets the soffit plane. Coordinating those areas prevents the roofline and wall from becoming completely separate exterior scopes where they physically intersect.
Continuous gutters manage roof water above the wall system. They perform a different function from the WRB and rainscreen, but gutters, fascia, soffit, wall flashings and cladding all contribute to how exterior water is managed around the building.
