Stacked Stone Exterior Cladding

Stacked stone creates a textured masonry appearance using narrow pieces of natural or manufactured stone arranged in layered horizontal courses.

The style is commonly used on entrances, columns, foundation walls, fireplaces, feature walls and lower portions of exterior elevations. It can also cover larger wall areas where stone is intended to become a dominant architectural material.

Stacked-stone products are available in natural stone as well as manufactured stone veneer systems. Manufactured products can reproduce ledgestone and other stacked masonry appearances while reducing the thickness and structural weight associated with traditional full-depth masonry.

Stone works particularly well beside fibre-cement siding, stucco, wood-look cladding and architectural metal. The contrast between textured masonry and cleaner siding or panel materials can create depth and stronger visual hierarchy across an exterior.

Successful stone installation depends heavily on the wall assembly behind the finished veneer. Weather-resistive barriers, drainage, flashing, clearances and transitions around windows, doors and adjacent cladding must be properly coordinated.

Different natural and manufactured stone systems have different attachment, mortar and drainage requirements. Installation should therefore follow the specifications for the exact stone veneer selected for the project.

Colour, texture and joint style can vary considerably between stone products, allowing the system to work with both contemporary and traditional exterior designs.
