Shake & Shingle Siding

Shake and shingle siding adds texture, depth and a more handcrafted appearance to exterior walls, gables and feature areas. The look can be achieved with natural cedar, fibre-cement products or other manufactured siding systems.

James Hardie offers HardieShingle fibre-cement siding, providing the appearance of traditional cedar shingles with the durability and lower maintenance characteristics of fibre cement. Woodtone also offers RusticSeries Shake, which applies its two-tone wood-look finish to manufactured siding substrates for a cedar-inspired appearance without the same ongoing refinishing requirements as exposed natural wood.

Natural Western Red Cedar shakes remain another option where authentic wood grain and natural variation are important to the project design.

Shake siding is commonly used on gables, upper-storey elevations, entrances and other architectural features, but it can also be used across larger wall areas. It works particularly well when combined with lap siding, board and batten, stone, masonry and metal cladding.

The correct installation method depends on the selected material. Flashing, rainscreen, wall drainage, fasteners, clearances and transitions to surrounding siding must all be coordinated with the complete exterior wall assembly.
